July 2008

Congleton Veterinary Centre held its open day on the 20th July and invited Stilesmeadow and Greenfields Greyhound Rescue to have an information stall and donations box. It was a great success for the new veterinary centre and also for Stiles and Greenfields. Pictured here is Sophie who had her face painted - a good time was had by all.

Thank you to James Ede, the veterinary partner at Congleton Veterinary Centre, West Heath Shopping Centre, for allowing us to publicise our cause. Good luck to you in your new venture!

June 2008

We would like to thank Stiles friend Judy for fostering two of our longtermers. Judy has taken in Barney with his broken leg for recouperation and now has taken Chad for a holiday. Chad is such a favourite with the Stiles volunteers, he has been with us for about 5 years and has actually been rehomed a few times. He finds life in a home rather stressful and has come back to us each time quite quickly! In Stiles he is a star and we have no behavioural problems with him - but he does need to be reintegrated into the real world. Judy has offered to help with this and we are really grateful for her kindness. Behave yourself Chad!!!

January 2008

The holiday period has been good for the dogs up at Stiles, in this last week four of our dogs have found wonderful homes. Whilst it's sad to see them go it is also wonderful to think of them settling down in front of a fire on these cold damp nights. Honey, Benji and Shep (now Pip) have not been with us long but Duke has been here for quite a while. HOORAY FOR DUKE!!! He so deserves this wonderful home.

All of our dogs are such characters - Marty is great, so clean and loves a good romp with the other dogs, he is very trustworthy with any of the dogs. He went out to a home for a few months but was brought back and for a while he was very neurotic, unwilling to even go out of the gate. He has come round now and would be an amazing pet. His buddies are Sasha and Jake. Sasha is a large staffie cross - she is happy up at Stiles, but really needs a home with her own garden and owner. She again perhaps lacks the "cuteness" factor (like Marty) and this could be why she is overlooked by visitors to Stiles. Jake is a loveable rogue - he is so friendly and bouncy, but drives me mad when he is hanging on the end of my brush! He would suit a newly retired family, or a family with teenagers as he would thrive on the attention and time they could give.

Tyson has been with us for a few months now - a typical staffie, he is great with people but has staffie attitude to other dogs - not a big problem because he is only a small staffie and so is easy to control. He would be a lovely family dog, he is very obedient and responsive. He spends a lot of the day sat in his basket looking hopeful - he really needs a home. Tyson loves to come into the back of the kennels where the blankets are kept whilst I am cleaning - he's very busy emptying boxes and distributing the contents around the shed. He also likes to drag the blankets from one end of the kennels to the other leaving them in a big pile on the floor - work that one out!

Jack is a great favourite with us volunteers - he is such a character! He has his smart red coat on for the winter now - not to come off until the spring. He has had a wonderful Christmas because the dogs were given lots of presents by kind members of the public and Jack JUST LOVES squeeky toys. All morning whilst I was working there were squeeks and grunts coming from Jack's little kennel - he has his own special des res as he has been in Stiles for so long. He would be an ideal companion for an elderly person who cannot get out for walks. All he would need would be a garden and a warm fire and someone to give him a good back scratch!

Chad and Brandy are long term residents at Stiles - they used to be the "three muskateers" with Roxy, but sadly Roxy passed away whilst at Stiles. They are perfect companions for each other and gradually Skippy is becoming the replacement third muskateer. Chad always creates interest from would-be adopters but he is very dominant when he leaves Stiles and has come back numerous times - he is happier here and will see out his days in Stiles. He is very affectionate but has a stubborn streak - nothing that can't be sorted out with a treat though!

None of the dogs deserve to find themselves in a dogs' home - but they are truly happy and so accepting of their lot in life. We like to think that we are preparing them for life with a family - something some of them have never experienced. Thank you to all of you who have opened your doors to these dogs and welcomed them into your homes. Keep up the good work in 2008!

Ann

Good luck Duke!

Chad and Jack .....

August 2007

June and Sam are shown receiving £331 which was raised at a special fund raising service held at the Spiritualist Churct, Newcastle under Lyme on August 27th. The evening was presided over by the Rev Elaine Bagshaw. A buffet meal was provided afterwards

Judith Mader, one of the members helped to organise the event. Judith gave Bridget, a rottweiler, a new home quite a few months ago.

The money was most gratefully received by the Sanctuary..

July 2007

Anne, Margaret and Jackie recently manned a stall at a local Tug of War competition - they were very chuffed because the Bosley Wood Treatment team won.  Anne and Margaret were photographed here enjoying the view - Jackie is hiding her face in embarrassment (or is she trying to get a better look).  They have already put their names down for next year's event - all in a good cause of course.

The event was in aid of cancer research but we are very grateful to Rachel who allowed us to collect for Stiles.  Photographed is one of the Bosley team presenting Anne with a cheque for Stiles.  Again spot Margaret at the back still enjoying the view!

The Mayor and Mayoress of Macclesfield attended and were very interested to hear about the work we do at Stiles.

The council in Congleton has put up the fee for reclaiming your lost dog.  From now, if your dog escapes and is brought to a dogs' home, there is a £90 charge to be reunited.  That is an excellent reason to get your dog microchipped (at considerably less cost!)

The RSPCA has introduced a new law this month - making it possible to prosecute pet owners who do not look after their pets properly.

More details can be found on the RSPCA website:

Jack finds love....but lets it slip through his fingers (paws)

Jack, who normally won't entertain the attentions of members of the canine race has fallen in love with Jess - unfortunately for him, but luckily for Jess, she has a new home and has left Stiles.

During those heady days they visited each other's abodes, compared and shared toys (the squeekier the better) and went for walks together.  Jack definitely had a spring in his step for those wonderful few weeks - but he has happy memories and has settled back to his old ways!

He's thoroughly spoilt by the volunteers and hopefully we will find him another lady friend terrier with a mutual interest in squeeky toys!

Merry Christmas Sam and June,

from all of your Barking Mad Volunteers -

without your dedication Stilesmeadow Dog Sanctuary could not continue, thank you for your constant devotion to the cause

Christmas came early at Stiles last week - 1st and 5th Pointon West Rainbows Group had a cuddly toy show and each child paid to enter their toy.

They raised £100 which they donated to Stilesmeadow Dog Sanctuary.

We invited the children to visit and twelve children came with their chief guider, Carol Paterson, and leader Sara.

We had a lovely afternoon and the children were very well behaved.

Just as they were leaving we had a big surprise  - each child brought in a Christmas basket full of goodies of all kinds for the dogs!

We at Stiles would like to say a very big thank you for all the work that went into their visit

PLEASE TAKE SPECIAL CARE OF YOUR DOGS OVER THE FIREWORK SEASON!

Every year many dogs are lost or run over on the roads after bolting at the sound of fireworks.

If your dog is distressed by fireworks, allow him to go into his bolthole (behind the settee, under the bed, understairs cupboard or wherever he likes to go), make him comfortable with bedding etc, play music to block out the bangs, close the curtains to hide the flashes and leave him to settle down.  Animal behaviourists suggest that you do not try and console your dog - as, instead of reassuring him, the dog takes it that you are telling him that he is right to be frightened and you are actually reinforcing his fear!

Second to win a Stiles Achievement Award is Bob.  Bob is a border collie who found his new home via Stiles.  He has won several rosettes over the last couple of years in various local shows.  He arrived at Stiles to receive his award looking beautifully sleek and well groomed.  He is a credit to his new owner (and Stiles!)

3/10/06

The first winner of our "Stiles Achievement Awards" is Guinness.  Guinness is, we believe, the longest living Stiles rescue dog.  He is 17 years old and found a happy home on the third attempt!  He was on holiday at Stiles this week and was given the award by the volunteers in a special awards ceremony!  He has taken his rosette home with him.  He is rightly very proud of it.

We always love to have visits from Stiles "graduates" at our open day - Joe came back to see us with his new  friend Ella,  two very happy dogs.

An email received from Sean:

"Just a line to say Esme and me enjoyed our little trip up to see you all recently when we brought Murphy in for rehoming.  I have since been lucky enough to get a job as Dog Warden in the area I live in,  I'm loving my new job and as a result dogs like Murphy  who you can see in the picture will get a second chance of being happy.

Thank you all again"

Nina came up to Stiles to see us this week.  She brought her owner, Lewis, who was donating some guinea pig cages to our bric a brac shop.  Nina was rescued from the RSPCA but was very impressed with Stiles.  Nevertheless she decided not to stay with us on this occasion and took her owner home smartish!

I think Guinness who is about 17 years old should be crowned Stiles oldest dog...Guinness had two unsuccessful rehomings and then 3rd time lucky he met his family, where he's spent many happy years....We hope that Guinness still has a few more years left.

James has grown up with Sammy-Jo, and thy have had great fun together. James loves dogs, and helps us at the kennels..."Thank you James"

With the aid of a grant from Sandbach Animal Rescue, Stiles underwent a facelift recently.  New doubleglazed windows and doors were fitted by Lifestyle Windows in Biddulph.  You can see the admiration on Margaret's face as she examines the quality of the goods.

Thank you to Sandbach Animal Rescue and Lifestyle for an excellent job which should ensure that our dogs stay warmer this winter.

WHY ADOPT A STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER?

'Never judge a book by its cover.' - A quote that could have been written for a Staffie.

If anyone told me 4 months ago that I would be waking up with a Staffie nestled into my back with her head on the pillow next to me I would have told them 'Not to be so stupid!'.

I have always wanted to get my daughter a dog and we were trying to find a cute little spaniel type.  I phoned Stiles Meadow and was told that the only small dog available was a little fat Staffie.  'Oh I don't want one of those' was my first reaction, like everyone else I have heard about those dangerous fighting dogs.  'Just come and see her' was the reply, and anyone who has child on a mission knows I had no choice but to go to the kennels.

We entered the yard and the the monster dog was let out, snorting and breathing fire.  Well actually all we saw was this adorable little creature with a huge smile and wagging tail, who came over to us and promptly rolled over to have her belly tickled.  Half an hour later sitting on the concrete I was hooked and I think it showed because we collected Jess (formally Jade) the next morning.

My family had the same reaction as I did at first and when we took Jess to meet them, all snorts and grunts, they backed off.  After less than a day with strangers Jess was rolling around on the floor with the kids and making the rounds with the adults, no-one was left out.  My sister was attacked by a dog and has always been very wary, it has taken a while but when she saw Jess the other day she bent down to fuss her (now that is something!!!!!!). We have accidentally stood on her, dropped things on her and any number of annoying things but she has never growled or snapped, all we ever get is a smiling face and wagging tail.

I wish I could explain how absolutely wonderful my dog is, but all I will say is that if you want a family dog or a companion who is loyal, content and just wants to love you then choose a Staffie, you will not regret it.
